Māori teams have competed against international sides since 1927. While a number of matches have been played in New Zealand, many others have taken place overseas.

Tours have been made, on several occasions, to such countries as Australia, New Caledonia, Samoa, Rarotonga, Fiji and Hawaii.

 

1927 NZ Māori V British Isles

A NZ Senior Men’s Team played a British Isles team at Whanganui. Although little was recorded in the media, we do have this photograph which depicts members of both teams. This kaupapa was instigated by Pei Te Hurinui Jones.

1953 NZ Māori V Australia

A NZ Māori Women’s Team played a touring Australian women’s team at the Rotorua Government Gardens’ tennis courts.

1971 NZ Māori V Queensland

A NZ Māori team was invited to play the touring Queensland Tasman Shield Team at Rotorua on 18 August 1971.

Team: Peter and Barry Smith, Bob Peni, Bruce Murdoch, Carlo Roia, and Jack Cooney.
Māori won 25 – 5.

 

1972 NZ Māori to Brisbane

Following the 1971 match at Rotorua, the Queensland Team invited a Māori team to go to Brisbane. Ted Maurice (NZMLTA President) organised a team to play the Queensland Tasman Shield Team. The team included Bill Kingi (kaumātua) Basil and Mary Corbett, Jack Cooney, Tau and Missy Kopu, Ra Atkinson, Carlo Roia, Barry and Peter Smith, Heitia and Marg Hiha.

 

1973 NZ Māori V Australian Juniors

This event took place in Rotorua. There are no details available.

 

1976 NZ Māori to New Caledonia

The competing nations in this tournament included Australia, Fiji, Japan, French Polynesia, Nauru, New Hebrides, and Western Samoa. The tournament was held from 16 to 22 October.

The Māori team included Frankie Dennis, Tari and June Atkinson, Ray and Shirley Atkinson, Peter Collins, Linda Grace, Emma Howe, Joyce Lyden, Harry Morrow, Bruce Murdoch, George and Gayle Palmer, John Paul, Sam Pehi, Rangi Stampa, and S. Brown.

 

1977 NZ Māori to New Caledonia

In August 1977, a five strong Māori tennis team travelled to New Caledonia to compete in the South Pacific Tennis Tournament.

The members included Mary Anne Costello, Dennis Hingston Jnr, Arleen Rollerston, Barry Smith and Bruce Murdoch.

The Māori team competed well, with Arleen runner up in the women’s singles and doubles. Arleen and Barry won the mixed doubles with Barry losing the semi final of the men’s singles.

 

1986 NZ Māori to Samoa and Rarotonga

Frankie Dennis organised this tour, travelling to Western and American Samoa before competing in the Oceania Tournament in Rarotonga.

Members included Emma Howe, Leona Davis, Kerri and Lexi Latimer, Mike and Deidre Keys, Doug and Evelyn Pai, Tom and Gaylene Quinn, Bruce and Clarice Murdoch, Adam and Liz Hohepa, Cedric and Pare Rivers, Basil, Mere and Karen Corbett, Ron Farrell, Janet Hogg, Helen Prime, Janine Te Pania, Kitty McGuire, and Eileen Brophy.

 

1995 AMTA Veterans to the South Pacific

Our Patron Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu and her husband Whatumoana, accompanied this tour group to Western Samoa, American Samoa, Hawaii, Rarotonga and Fiji.

The group included Frankie Dennis, Mita and Dulcie Mohi, Dinny and Val Mohi, Peter and Betty Harris, Bob and Lynda Peni, Bob and Raewyn Graham, Basil and Mere Corbett, Richard and Robyn Tamaho, Ron and Sandy Farrell, Heather Emery, Hema Tata, Terry and Agnes McManus, Lavona Hogan, Bill Tangariki, Apu Pennell, and Dick and Desrae Garratt.

 

2001 AMTA Juniors to Queensland

This tour was instigated by Angus Douglas, Wayne Douglas and Dick Garratt.

A Junior squad was selected to compete in tournaments in Queensland. The squad included David Brake, Roddy Hill, Shay Morrison, Ashley, Nicole and Zanna Douglas, Erena and Manumea Durie, Stacey Housley and Elizabeth Housley.

Managers and Coaches: Rewa Hudson, Wayne and Tirini Douglas, Angus and Jo Ann Douglas, and Josephine Rakoczy.

 

2003 AMTA Veterans to Queensland Senior Tennis Champs

A Māori Veterans team took part in the Queensland Open Veterans’ Tournament. The group included Tamati and Tilly Reedy, Bob and Raewyn Graham, Basil and Mere Corbett, Victor and Pare Anderson, Jo Tamati and Celia Railey, Dick and Desrae Garratt, Ron Farrell, Peter Thomas, and Harry Tawhai.
